Do you Cue in your dreams?
Written by Barb Ballard on January 14th, 2009 | 8 CommentsI realized recently, that from time to time, I find myself Cueing in my dreams. Sometimes it is when I’m communicating with someone to whom I would normally Cue, but in other dreams I find myself Cueing to people who have no knowledge of Cued Speech. It seems that when I find myself Cueing to them, it is because I’m trying very hard to make myself understood. It seems my brain has embraced that fact that what I want to convey comes across with more comprehension when I Cue; and therefore, in my dreams I find myself Cueing when I want to be precisely understood. As in my real life, I rarely, if ever, have anyone Cue to me in my dreams. Do you Cue in your dreams? If so, to whom do you Cue, or who Cues to you?

I’ve used sign for 18 years daily. I never dream in sign or deaf languages at all. Nor in any other form, I am always hearing and speaking ! It depends on how you are born I think.

I’ve been cueing with my son who is deaf for nearly 25 years; also, I am a professional transliterator for close to 20 years, but i can’t say that i cue in my dreams. I often hear newly trained transliterators say that they cue in their dreams. I always wondered why i don’t. It just doesn’t happen for me, or may I completely block it out, not sure.
However, often I do find my self cueing with hearing people thinking that i will be better understood like you are describing; embarrassing:)

Yes!
Only once or twice in my life though despite being a native cuer, oddly enough. One cueing dream was in German.
Basically I was in German class giving a presentation on the Railroads of the Habsburg empire or something, and cueing in German. It was weird, because never once have I had to learn about Austro-Hungarian railroads, and never once had I cued German for more than a few words before. LOL

Uh Ester, I think that one qualifies as a nightmare.
Do you also dream about showing up for class to find out your having a test and you didn’t study?
LOL

Hah! it wasn’t actually that nightmarish. Just odd, because I was definitely cueing more fluently in German than I’d ever actually done when speaking, let alone cueing…
Never had the “surprise test” dream. Thankfully.

Barb,
I have never cued in my dreams, but often find myself cueing to hearing people. This happens most often when I want to add emphasis or make a point. Just ask my daughter Maddie and the girls on my basketball team. I often cue to (at?) the girls, especially during a game –”Get the ball!” or “Bounce pass!” will come out with voice and cues.

I don’t normally cue IN my dreams however, I have woken myself up cueing in my sleep. It’s happened on more than one occasion. Lol!

I can’t recall cueing in my dreams….but I did catch my mother on several occasions cueing to our dogs (this was when I was younger). It was a constant source of amusement to me.
