Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat and Capt. Zsak

Walter, Victor, Ryan and Andy were down from Buffalo, NY to do some sport fishing and decided to charter the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

We started out the fishing trip targeting large fish and went right out to the deeper waters where the Sailfish and the Sharks have been traveling. We put out two kites with two live Goggle Eyes for baits from each kite as well as one deeper Shark bait. From there we went to the drop off, and put out three baits, two baits were for Sharks – one bait on the surface and one bait 200 ft. deep. Within an hour, a Shark came swimming around the surface bait and made a few turns searching for the bait. The Shark found the bait, ate it and the Shark was on. The Shark dumped a few hundred yards of line, screaming out drag. The angler battled the Shark for over an hour with some gains and losses before the Shark finally came close enough to grab the leader line – it was a 250 lb Hammerhead Shark. Pictures were taken and the Shark was released to fight another day.

Next, we came into shallower water and put out a full live bait spread with two Goggle Eye baits on the left and right kites. After an hour of keeping the baits in their positions, a White Marlin came up to the left short bait. He slashed at the bait a few times missing it until his final attempt, engulfing it. The White Marlin swam and fed for 60 seconds, then came up jumping out of the water a few times. Ryan was the angler – we strapped him into the fighting chair and he started fighting the White Marlin. Ryan had him on for 30 minutes but the White Marlin ended up breaking the leader. An exciting time was had on this fishing trip.

It was now time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.

Fishing Forum CHL’s NEW Herring Grub Tantalizes Bluefin Trevally!

Completely Hooked Lures New 4in “Herring” Grub!

Today i decided to try a new deserted cove to try out Landon Yamamoto’s new grub lure The Herring. A new style of life-like soft plastic grubs for Completely Hooked Lures. In the first hour i had a hug hit followed by a medium hit, then watched a Barracuda cutting another Herring grub in half. Yup, the fish love them.

It was COLD & the first day in weeks that the sun came out. So i decided to stay and freeze my butt off wading out to the drop-off. After freezing in the water i went back to shore & bingo! A small hit, but a hit that held. My drag was to tight from my previous hit so i was lucky the hook didn’t tear out. I did go out at night a week ago & caught a 5gal bucket full of fish, but my new headlamp red light wasn’t strong enough to video so decided not to use that night’s footage as the quality was very poor.

I tried using a sickle bait-holder hook but threading the hook through 1/4 of the 4in grub caused the grub to run straight (though the fish were hitting it). After texting My Yamamoto on what was going on he suggested hooking the front tip only. Bingo! The lure started zig-zagging and within minutes got a solid hook-up on a young Bluefin Trevally “Omilu”. After taking a quick pic i released it back.

I ended up using up all my available Herring grubs. Only brought the new “Halloween” grubs, i stupidly left all the other colors at home with my Mutsu Circle Hooks. So i was forced to use the few new Herrings i had in my insulated cooler backpack & a few loose bait-holder hooks that i had for spin-fishing. But i was happy with the results. Found the optimum way of presenting the grubs & saw that the fish loved the reaction & color.

Dave and Rick from California and Gary and John from Pennsylvania were down in Fort Lauderdale and decided to charter the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. We had choppy seas ranging from 3 to 4 feet and the wind was blowing out of the southeast.

As we left the inlet, we headed to the northeast of Fort Lauderdale where a structure lies in 300 feet of water – we started the day fishing in this spot. The water had a deep blue color, as well as some north current going about a nautical knot. We put out two kites – a right kite and a left kite – with two live Goggle Eyes for baits per kite. We had a perfect spread of baits, and I knew a Sailfish would be showing up.

After some time of working the kites, a Sailfish’s dorsal fin popped up on the left kite bait. Matt, our mate fed the Sailfish, and as the Sailfish got hooked, he came jumping out of the water. The Sailfish started ripping drag out and running all over to get away. Dave was the angler, and he did a super job reeling in the Sailfish to the side of the boat. The Sailfish was brought into the boat for photos, and was released into the water to swim away.

We went back to kite fishing and put the same set back out. This time a Mahi Mahi ate the Goggle Eye bait, and it gave us a good fight. The angler brought the Mahi to the side of the boat, where we gaffed him and put him on ice. Mahi’s are good eating fish.

It was now time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316. At the dock, Matt filet the Mahi for the anglers to enjoy for tonight’s dinner.

Tony, Bill, Rick, Ryan, Neil and George, a group of guys from the Boston area, were down in Fort Lauderdale and decided to charter the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. We had nice temperature today, in the mid 70’s, and easterly winds blowing 15 mph. The seas were choppy at 3 to 4 feet.

We started the trip with kite fishing in 150 ft. of water, 1.8 miles from shore north of Fort Lauderdale. We put out two kites with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite. The first couple of baits in the water got attacked right away – within the first 5 minutes – catching one Kingfish and missing another one. We reset our spread of baits back out only to have another couple of Kingfish tear through the spread, cutting our Goggle Eye baits in half with their razor sharp teeth.

We moved out a little deeper to avoid the Kingfish attack, and after some time, we caught a Mahi Mahi, followed by a nice big Barracuda, which gave us a good fight.

With little to no time left in the trip, the dead bait we had put out close to the bottom got hit, and the rod bent over so hard it almost touched the water line. We were hooked up to a real nice Shark. The Shark ripped off a ton of line as he headed offshore. We hooked up the Shark in 350 feet of water, and after an hour fight, it took us out to 500 feet of water. All the guys in the group took turns fighting this Shark until we got him to the side of the boat. The Shark turned out to be a 10 ft. Big Eye Thresher. Pictures were taken and the Shark was released.

It was now time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.

Brian Matthies, Eric Gilbert and Pat Banks were down in Fort Lauderdale from Baltimore and Chicago and chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

We started the morning catching live bullet Bonitos; we went to a local ship and caught the bait at the bow of the ship. The ship was anchored in 100 ft. of water and the live baits were swimming up current of the anchor chain. Next we trolled up to the north of Fort Lauderdale and fished over a sunken ship wreck. We did not catch anything trolling heading to the wreck, but when we got to the wreck, we sent down a live bait that we caught and hooked up with a large Amberjack.

We went back to the same wreck trying to catch another large Amberjack, but they would not bite a second time. Next, we switched over to kite fishing – flying two kites with four live baits – a right and left kite that flew a couple of hundred feet away from each other. The first Sailfish was caught by Brian, his Sailfish came up on the right short bait. Brian had a long and tough battle before bringing this stud Sailfish in the boat to get the hooks out and for a quick photo. We went right back to kite fishing, and within 30 minutes, we got hooked up with another Sailfish. This time Eric was the angler. This Sailfish ripped off a bunch of drag, and as we were fighting his fish, another Sailfish fed on the opposite side. All of a sudden, we had double header Sailfish. Both Pat and Eric did a great job bringing the Sailfish to the side of the boat. We got one photo and released both Sailfish.

With three Sailfish and one Amberjack, it was now time to head back to the dock. What a great job the anglers did bringing in the Sailfish. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat and Capt. Zsak

Louis, Alexandra, Jeremy and Bree chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Fifteen to twenty minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. We started out trolling in 150 feet of water north of Fort Lauderdale looking to target Blackfin Tuna. The fishing spread we used was: four surface lines with Tuna feathers and 2 deep lines with Ballyhoo’s. I worked from 100 feet out to 400 feet of water, zigzagging back and forth. These fish will move to different depths depending on the water and temperature. After working a reef structure and narrowing down the best conditions, we got a double header of Mahi Mahi bites. The anglers fought the Mahi Mahi’s, bringing both to the side of the boat. Matt, our mate, put them on ice.

We continued trolling north of Fort Lauderdale when the deep Ballyhoo line ripped off drag – we had a nice Black Fin Tuna on the line. After catching the Tuna we decided to try for something larger. The trolling lines came in, and we set out one kite with two live Goggle Eyes as baits. We also put out two Shark baits – one on the surface and one deep down. Once set up, we kept the live baits on the surface and the Shark baits in line. All of sudden, we had a huge bite on the surface bait, and the line ripped out. Jeremy was the angler and started fighting the Shark. After a good battle, Jeremy got the Shark to the side of the boat – it was a Hammerhead. We were able to get the hooks out, snapped a few photos and released the Shark.

It was now time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat and Capt. Zsak

Jason, Paul, Niles and Matt from Toronto chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The guys were looking for good catches and lots of action, which is what we set out to accomplish. We had clear skies and warm weather, with the days high at 75 degrees.

The best method of fishing has been trolling the reef from 100 ft. to 475 ft. of water. We left the dock and within 15-20 minutes we were in 120 ft. of water, 1.8 miles from shore south of Fort Lauderdale. We set out two plainers, a #8 and a #6, using Bonito strip baits and a sea witch. For surface baits we went with four Ballyhoos.

We zig zagged from 200 to 400 ft. of water heading south of Fort Lauderdale and started getting bites on both the plainer rods and the rigger line. The anglers took turns catching and wiring in the fish and caught one Sailfish, two Wahoos weighing 15 lbs. each and three Bonitos.

The guys wanted to try for a Shark, so next we got three Bonito Shark baits ready and put them out in 300 ft. of water – one on the bottom, one midrange and one on the surface. Shark fishing is a waiting game, and we tried for an hour but unfortunately, did not catch a Shark.

It was now time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316. Matt, our mate, filet the fish for the angler to take home and enjoy.

Bill, Matt, David, Mike, Kirk and Dan decided to charter the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The guys were looking to have a fun day on the water and catch some fish.

I decided to head down to an area called the Hollywood pump which has treated water pumped out from the city of Hollywood. We started with our trolling spread from Dania Beach down to Hollywood with two deep plainer lines and three surface lines. We trolled the reef from 90′ of water to 200′ of water until we reached the Hollywood pump and worked the area going over and around the bubble.

There were plenty of live bait hanging around the up current side, and the Kingfish were showering the baits. Birds were diving and swooping down to catch the Ballyhoo having their own feeding frenzy. We changed over from our trolling spread to the live bait kite spread. I sent one right and one left kite a few hundred feet behind the boat with 4 live Goggle Eye baits (2 per kite) along with one deep bottom rod with a dead bait. We watched the Ballyhoo get hit on all angles from the Kingfish in the area and patiently waited for our bite. We did have a few nice Kingfish explode on our bait, but the three got away.

All of a sudden a Sailfish came up to the short kite bait, he fed and got hooked up. The Sailfish started jumping out of the water. He made a long run almost spooling the reel. Our first angler reeled like crazy to retrieve the line. All the guys had a turn angling the Sailfish and the 6th angler brought the Sailfish to the side of the boat. We brought the Sailfish into the boat, removed the hooks, got a photo and put the Sailfish back in the water to live another day.

Next we went back to trolling the reef catching two Kingfish. The fish were about 10 pounds each, and they both ate the deep plainer lines.

It was time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.

Fishing Forum SW FL-Bonita Beach–still windy, still fishing!

Monday, 2/5/18, I fished with frequent customer, Ron Musick, joined by friends who are visiting for a few days. We used cut-bait and squid to fish spots out to 28 miles from New Pass. The spots that have consistently yielded lots of lane snapper have not been doing so recently, and this day was no exception. But, the group did catch over twenty nice-sized porgies, along with some grunts. They released twenty-five red grouper shorts, along with a 15-inch mutton snapper.

On Wednesday, 2/7, Craig Royal and family fished 24 miles west of New Pass with me, where there continued to be lots of small bait fish around, and keeper fish seemed scarce, despite steady action. The group released a couple dozen red grouper shorts to 18 inches, along with two big lizard fish about 19 inches each. They did box three keeper lane snapper and a dozen grunts, all of which bit on squid and cut-bait.

Roy Mittman fished in various spots out to 25 miles west of New Pass with me on Monday morning, 2/12. Once again, the red grouper bite was active, but yielded no keepers, and we released over twenty shorts. Keepers included lane snapper and grunts, which bit on squid.

Tuesday, 2/13, I spent the morning fishing the backwaters of southern Estero Bay with John Pompeo and his son, John, Jr. The guys used live shrimp to catch ten sheepshead to 15 inches and a 16-inch black drum.

Bob Ellis and his friend, Tim, fished about 15 miles west of New Pass with me on Wednesday 2/14, where they used cut-bait and squid to release four red grouper shorts and two gag grouper out-of-season shorts to 21 inches. They boxed a 15-inch sheepshead, a keeper porkfish, and three grunts.

Eddie Alfonso, Kay Daugherty, and Liz Condos fished 17 miles west of New Pass with me on Thursday, 2/15, using cut-bait and squid. The group released red grouper shorts to 18 inches, along with a would-be-legal (if in season) gag grouper, and a 16-inch triggerfish. They caught a mess of grunts, so fish tacos were still on the menu, even with having to release the other catches.

The photo shown is of Liz Condos with a 24-inch, out-of-season gag grouper, caught on cut-bait and released.

After a couple of days off the water, due to a family event, Mike Bochman and his friend, Kevin joined me to fish 20 miles offshore on Monday, 2/19. Seas got progressively choppier throughout the morning. The guys used squid and cut-bait to release fifteen red grouper shorts to 19 inches, along with a 15-inch scamp grouper. They loaded up on grunts for fish tacos.

Mike McCarthy and friends, Ken, Tim and Eddie, fished in various spots out to 35 miles west of New Pass with me on Tuesday, 2/20. We had steady action at the 35 mile spot, where the guys released over thirty red grouper shorts to just short of 20 inches, inches, five gag grouper to 22 inches, several yellowtail snapper shorts, and a few banded rudder fish, all around 18 inches. They loaded up their cooler with lots of 15-inch porgies and 15-inch grunts. Everything bit on squid and cut-bait.

Mike McCarthy and friends, Ken, Benny and Timmy, fished in various spots out to 35 miles west of New Pass with me on Tuesday, 2/20. We had steady action at the 35 mile spot, where the guys released lots of red grouper shorts to 19 12 inches, five gag grouper to 22 inches, several yellowtail snapper shorts, and a few banded rudder fish, all around 18 inches. They loaded up their cooler with lots of 15-inch porgies and 15-inch grunts. Everything bit on squid and cut-bait.

Seas were choppier than predicted, with some rain off Naples, on Wednesday morning, 2/21, when I fished 18 miles offshore with Mark Dutkewych and his young son, Nick. The guys caught and released a dozen red grouper shorts and a dozen or so grunts before calling it a morning.

Wayne Geall and friends, Tucker Seabrook, Carm, and Clay, fished the backwaters of southern Estero Bay with me on a windy Thursday morning, 2/22. Using live shrimp, the group caught sixteen sheepshead, including one nice keeper at 19 inches. They also released two mangrove snapper shorts, a spadefish, three black drum, and a brace of two-pound stingrays.

The photo shown is of Tucker Seabrook with a 19-inch sheepshead, caught on shrimp in Estero Bay.

It was another windy morning in southern Estero Bay on Friday, 2/23, when I fished a catch-and-release trip with Bob and Mary-Lou Schwartz and their grandchildren, Hannah and Tyler. The family used live shrimp to release a 17-inch black drum, two would-be-keeper mangrove snapper at 11 inches each, a lady fish, nine sheepshead shorts, and a 22-inch sailcat.
