Fishing Forum Fishing Report for Ucluelet, B.C. off the West Coast of Vancouver Island on Aug 29th, 2018

Chomp chomp! The rocks are packed with hungry salmon. Wya Point is at the center of the action producing days of 10-20 chinooks from 10-25lbs. For those who want to fish the flat water the Sound is seeing chinooks being caught in volume from Cree Island all the way back to Pill point.

The offshore fishery has seen the volume of Chinooks decline while enormous amounts of Coho continue to pass through the grounds. The remaining Chinooks on Big Bank are being taken on the ground underneath the swaths of Coho. Try trolling the floor with big hoochies for Chinooks and halibut.

Halibut are still being taken off big Bank although the catch effort has lessened with the majority of the rod time taking place inshore for chinooks. Halibut anchor sessions in the shallows are producing fish from 10 to 40 lbs however not with the consistency of prior weeks. Try trolling the ground up around The Whale’s Tale as it seems to be holding good volume of chicken halibut from 8-15lbs.

Chinooks on the beach! The first of the much anticipated late season rock runners arrived with a bang this week. Wya Point all the way to the Red Can is producing chinooks averaging 14-20lb with a couple ranging into the mid twenties. A mix of anchovies and size 3 & 3.5 spoons are being fished with the preference changing by the day. Pack a good variety of UV/ glow flashers (blue and white footloose are a couple staples) as the fish can be a little picky, especially when fishing under a blanket of fog.

The offshore fishery at Big Bank continues to fire with 10-16lb Chinooks mixed in amongst enormous volumes of Coho. Stay tuned as any day now the arival of the Northern Coho will bring silvers ranging into the teens.

Halibut fishing Continues to be strong on the outter Banks. The shallows continues to crank offering up steady production on anchor. Limits of 15-40lb fish have been seen through the area for the last month. An influx of chickens onto Big Bank has seen many more troll friendly 10-15 pounders. These are a welcome bonus as they often come incidentally while salmon fishing.

Millions of salmon continue to chomp their way through our offshore waters this week. The North nipple on big bank is producing enormous volumes of Coho with Chinooks into the mid-teens mixed in. For those of you that like to Target fish swinging a fly or bucktailing behind the boat, this week has been epic! It’s being a daily occurrence seeing dozens of Chinook and Coho fining on the surface around the boat at one time.

For quality sized chinooks, the grounds between the outside light, the southwest corner, and the wreck have been the most consistent. Limits of chinooks 15lbs and up were taken again this morning between the outside light and the corner.

Halibut fishing on the Outer Banks has remained consistent. Continuing the trend since mid July, the majority of the halibut continue to come on the anchor. The flatts between the shallows and The Whale’s Tale just continues to produce fish. Try a belly tipped white grub as a third rod to offer the halibut a little variety while on the pick.

Busy rods and calm seas entertained anglers offshore this week. The the fleet has been split between the Southwest Corner and Big Bank. The Fraser River chinooks chomped steadily through the first half of the week between the outside light and the corner. 3-4″ Maverick and herring aid spoons on blue chrome boards were the staples. For those that prefer to fish without the flasher, this week’s been a good week. Big 6-7″ spoons like superiors and clendon Stewarts took limits of chinooks with some reaching well into the mid 20’s. The Bank continues to produce enormous volumes of Coho from 4 to 10 lbs with chinooks mixed in around the 100′ mark.

For those looking to fish the rocks, chinooks are being taken all through the surf line by those who show patience. Pick your favorite hunters and keep rubbing the rocks. Any day now we’re expecting a serious push of local rivers chinooks into Wya and surrounding areas.

Halibut fishing was good this week with most fish coming on anchor. The outside light and the shallows saw the majority of the halibut taken. Some fantastic size came out of lighthouse bank with limits of 20-45 pounders mixed in with some oversized 60-100 Pound fish released. Big bank has continued to steadily produce 10-30 Pound fish from the shallows to the whales tail.

Tight lines!

The bank has been on fire this week! From the shallows all the way to Halli West, Anglers are seeing huge volume of salmon all through the column. Guides are seeing 10-40 chinooks to the boat daily ranging from 8-25lbs. The most consistent depths have been mid-water around the 100 foot mark. Enormous amounts of coho are chomping spoons and hoochies before the gear makes it into the downrigger clips. 3 to 4 inch kingfisher glow spoons have been the preferred gear through the week.

The Halibut fishery has been good this week. Fishing on the inner Banks has been slower but few boats have been fishing these areas. The shallows at big bank has seen most of the catch effort and is producing volume of halibut from 10 to 30 lbs. Consistency has been found anchored up on the flood tide.
